Use data services

You can learn how to view data collected from data routes.

Visualize time series data

You can visualize time series data from an edge device, such as data saved in an InfluxDB database. You can view data being received in near real time or data for a historical period.

You can verify that data is being received from the device, and if there have been gaps or changes in the data received.

Time series data analysis is enabled when the data destination is a time series database, such as InfluxDB, and the route is in any deployed status.

Procedure

  1. In the IIoT Core Services UI, select the Data Route tab.

  2. Select the data route that you want to view.

The data route details page opens.
  3. Select the Analysis tab near the top of the page.

  4. In the Data Destination list, select an InfluxDB destination.

  5. Specify values for the following properties:

    PropertyDescription
Data DestinationIf the data route has multiple InfluxDB database destinations, you can select the one that you want.
PropertyThe database field that you want to visualize.

Only properties with numeric values are supported.

Time RangeTime ranges for visualization. Select one of the following:
    • 2 weeks
    • 3 days
    • 1 day
    • 12 hours
    • 6 hours
    • 1 hour
    • 30 minutes
Refresh RateTime interval between data points. Select from the following:
    • 1 second
    • 3 seconds
    • 5 seconds
    • 10 seconds
    • 30 seconds
    • 1 minute
    • 1 hour
  6. Analyze the graph. Hover over the time series chart and roll the mouse wheel to expand or collapse the time series graph. Click and drag to move forward and back in the chart. Hover over a data point to see information such as value or time stamp.

View unstructured data

You can view unstructured data saved in a Couch database from an edge device.

IIoT Core Services allows you to verify that data is being received from the device. Data analysis is enabled when the data destination is Couch and the route is in any deployed state.

Procedure

  1. From the IIoT Core Services UI, select the Data Route tab.

  2. Select the data route that you want to view.

  3. Select the Analysis tab near the top of the page.

  4. Under Data Destination, select a Couch destination.

Results

If data successfully populates the database, which only happens in the Deployed (Connected) state, a table displays ID, Key, and Value information for the selected data destination.

If no data displays, return to the Data Routes page. Select the relevant route to open the detailed view and read any error messages in the Data Destination Status field.

If no error displays for the route but data is not populating, check whether the data source at the device end is transmitting data.

View store and forward data

You can view the number of records that are waiting to be forwarded while the route to a destination is unavailable.

When a data route destination is not reachable, IIoT Core Services stores incoming data and forwards the data when the connection is restored. The data is then transmitted to the destination.

Store and forward can be enabled or disabled for any destination within a route. This is done in the Data Destinations section of either the create or edit data route operations.

  • Enabled

The Number of Records field shows 0 if there are no issues, otherwise the field displays number of records.

  • Disabled

The Number of Records field shows disabled.

Use IIoT Core Services to view how many records are stored during an error condition.

Procedure

  1. In the IIoT Core Services UI, select the Data Route tab.

  2. Select the data route that you want to view.

  3. Select the Store & Forward tab near the top of the page.

Results

The number of records is displayed for each data destination within the data route.
