IIoT Core Services

This section describes IIoT Core Services, its features, and its environment.

IIoT Core Services includes these features:

  • Alerts

Use out-of-box alerts to monitor your system and notify you of developing conditions before they turn into serious problems. You can also create custom alerts using the IIoT Core Common Data Model (CDM).

  • Asset management

Use IIoT Core Services to define assets with a description, a location, an image to identify the assets, and other asset properties. You can also create child assets in a hierarchical fashion to develop a more granular representation of each asset in the form of digital twins.

  • Centralized logging service

Use the centralized logging capability to troubleshoot IIoT Core Services and any other applications that you deploy to this environment. The centralized logging capability provides insight into the state of the IIoT Core components.

  • Data Catalog integration

Data Catalog is an optional software component that can be used with IIoT Core to perform data profiling and analyze the content and quality of the data.

  • Data route management

Configure and manage the data routes of your IT systems. IIoT Core Services supports ingestion and storage of multiple data types, (time series, structured, unstructured, object) with tools to visualize the data flow in near real-time or from stored data. Using the IIoT Core Services UI, you can display data routes for both devices and device groups.

  • Data transparency

Provides near real-time visibility into collected data by visualizing store and forward records, time series data, and unstructured data.

  • Deploy custom gateway configurations

Deploy, update, and view software configurations on gateway devices. You can deploy multiple configuration files on single or multiple devices, and manage them at individual device level on the device details page.

  • Deploy custom services

Use IIoT Core Services to deploy, manage, and monitor any Linux-based container applications or services for custom operational analytics. Your applications can leverage its built-in services to speed up the development process. Upload software images to the IIoT Core Services repository and then deploy them to single or multiple devices or to an IIoT Core Services node. Manage containers with the IIoT Core Services software management features.

  • Intermittent connectivity

Use polling to check on the state and connectivity of a device. Activate polling when creating devices and configure polling parameters to suit your application.

  • Manage device groups

The Device Group tab in the IIoT Core Services UI lets you manage device groups from a central location. It shows you all the device groups that are configured for your environment and provides the ability to create, edit, delete, and deploy them.

  • Machine learning (ML) service and digital twin framework

Accelerate and scale operations application deployment with a complete IIoT data platform framework, including digital twin and Machine learning service.

  • Manage devices

The Device tab lets you manage devices from a central location. You can view all the devices that are configured for your environment and create, edit, delete, and bookmark them. It also displays cluster node and gateway device information such as status, state, and number of alerts.

  • Monitor software status

IIoT Core Services provides real-time status information for services running on your devices and also provides status information for device groups. You can gauge the health of your system before, during, and after software maintenance activities.

  • Notifications

Notifications can be triggered for system events to provide updates via email (SMTP). Notification settings can be configured for devices in the IIoT Core Services UI.

  • Productized APIs

You can use management plane APIs on the Administration tab in IIoT Core Services and view descriptions, properties, and examples.

  • Rules engine

Apply conditional rules based on Open Policy Agent (OPA) and Rego to data flows on IIoT Core to customize how IIoT Core Services should respond in specific situations.

  • Store and forward

Prevents data loss in the event of network failure. When a data route is disrupted, IIoT Core Services stores incoming data and forwards it to the destination when the connection is restored.

  • System administration features

Troubleshoot using system administration features that can gather performance metrics, record the number of incoming messages, and set log levels. Other system administration features include configuring AMQP persistence.
