Managing associations

You can add, view, and delete associations of business terms with data assets, and business terms with another business term.

NoteTo manage associations, you need to be assigned the Associate Business Term role permission.

Use the following procedures as needed:

Manage associations of business terms with data assets

To manage associations of business terms with a data asset, navigate to a data asset in Data Canvas and then click the Glossary tab.

Associate business terms with a data asset

You can associate business terms with a data asset. Perform the following steps to associate a business term with a data asset:

Procedure

  1. Navigate to the Data Canvas.

  2. Select the data asset for which you want to add the association.

  3. Click the Glossary tab.

    The list of associated business terms opens.
  4. Click Add New.

    The list of Business Terms opens.
  5. Select the business term that you want to associate with the data asset.

    NoteYou can select multiple business terms from the list to associate with the data asset.
  6. Click Assign.

    If the workflow is implemented on the parent entity of the data asset, follow the workflow process to complete the association. For more information, see Manage workflows and Using workflows.

Results

The association between the business term and the data asset is created.

View business terms associated with a data asset

You can view business terms that are associated with a data asset. Perform the following steps to view the list of business terms associated with a data asset in the Data Canvas:

Procedure

  1. Navigate to the Data Canvas.

  2. Select the data asset for which you want to view associations.

    The following table describes the association details.

    Column nameDescription
    Business TermSpecifies the name of the business term associated with the selected data asset. Click the link to navigate to the Glossary page to view the business term details.
    Method TypeSpecifies the method of assignment. Possible method types are:
    • Value
    • Regex
    • Rule
    • Manual
    • Mapping
    Term Acceptance (only for Accepted/Suggested terms)Specifies the term acceptance method. Possible acceptance methods are:
    • Automatic
    • Manual
    • Rule based
    Use In LearningSpecifies whether the association is used in learning or not.
    StatusSpecifies the status of data element associationsfor the business term. Possible status types are:
    • Accepted
    • Suggested
    • Rejected
    • Seeded
    NoteYou can use Show Columns to customize the display.
  4. (Optional) Click Show Filters and select the specific business terms associated with the data asset you want to view.

View data assets associated with a business term

You can view data assets that are associated with a business term in the Business Glossary page. Perform the following steps to view the list of data assets associated with a business term:

Procedure

  1. Navigate to the Business Glossary page.

  2. Select the business term for which you want to view associations.

  3. Click the Associations tab. The associated data assets list opens.

    The following table describes the association details:

    Column nameDescription
    AssetSpecifies the name of the data asset associated with the selected business term. Click the link to navigate to the Data Canvas page to view the data asset details.
    Method TypeSpecifies the method of assignment. Possible method types are:
    • Value
    • Regex
    • Rule
    • Manual
    • Mapping
    Term AcceptanceSpecifies the term acceptance method. Possible acceptance methods are:
    • Automatic
    • Manual
    • Rule based
    Use In LearningSpecifies whether or not the association is used in learning.
    ConfidenceSpecifies the confidence value of the association assigned during term discovery.
    PathSpecifies the data asset path.
    Sample DataSpecifies the sample data, if applicable.
    Data QualitySpecifies the data quality metric, if applicable.
    StatusSpecifies the type of data element associations for the data asset. Possible association status types are:
    • Accepted
    • Suggested
    • Rejected
    • Seeded
    NoteYou can use Show Columns to customize the display.
  4. (Optional) Click Show Filters to find the specific association that you want to view.

    NoteBy clicking the More actions icon (…), you can also perform Use as Seed, Use In Learning, or Do not Use In Learning actions on the data assets with Accepted status.

Change the association status of a business term with the data asset

You can change the status of a data element association for the associated business term. Perform the following steps to change the association status:

Procedure

  1. Navigate to the Data Canvas.

  2. Select the data asset for which you want to change the association.

  3. Click the Glossary tab.

    The associated business terms list opens.
  4. From the associated business term list, select the More actions icon (…) for the business term association for which you want to change the status.

  5. Select the action of the data element association based on the status.

    • For Accepted terms, you can select:
      • Reject & Use In Learning
      • Reject & Do not Use In Learning
      • Do not Use In Learning
      • Use as Seed
    • For Rejected terms you can select:
      • Accept & Use In Learning
      • Accept & Do not Use In Learning
      • Use in Learning
    • For Suggested terms you can select:
      • Accept & Use In Learning
      • Accept & Do not Use In Learning
      • Reject & Use In Learning
      • Reject & Do not Use In Learning
    NoteIf a workflow is implemented on the parent entity of the data asset, follow the workflow process to change the association status. For more information, see Manage workflows and Using workflows.

Results

The status of the data element association changes in the Status or Use In Learning columns or both, based on the action you selected. It also reflects in the associated data element's metrics.

Remove business term association with the data asset

You can delete an association of a business term with the data asset if it is no longer needed. Perform the following steps to delete an association:

Procedure

  1. Navigate to the Data Canvas.

  2. Select the data asset for which you want to remove the association.

  3. Click the Glossary tab.

    The associated business terms list opens.
  4. From the associated business term list, select the More actions icon (…) for the business term for which you want to remove the association.

  5. Click Remove Association. You can also click the business term and select Remove Association.

    NoteIf a workflow is implemented on the parent entity of the data asset, follow the workflow process to delete the association. For more information, see Manage workflows and Using workflows.

Results

The selected association is removed.

Manage associations between business terms

To manage associations of one or more business terms with another business term, navigate to the Business Glossary page. Select the business term and then click the Associations tab.

Use the following procedures as needed:

Associate a business term with another business term

You can associate a business term with another business term and create a relationship that describes the link between two business terms.

Perform the following steps to associate a business term with another business term:

Procedure

  1. Navigate to the Business Glossary.

  2. Select the business term for which you want to add the association.

  3. Click the Associations tab.

  4. Select Business Terms from the Associated drop-down list.The list of associated business terms opens.

  5. Click Add New. The Add New Relationship screen opens.GUID-084CC934-3116-4611-B925-8E23FBD1A383-low.png

    Specify the following information:

    • Relationship Type: Select the relationship type from the drop-down list. Possible relationship types are:
      • Is a Type of...[inverse is: Includes…]
      • Has a…[inverse is: Belongs to…]
      • Is Referenced By…[inverse is: References…]
      • Is Impacted By…[inverse is: Impacts…]
      • Is a Synonym Of…[inverse is: Is a Synonym Of…]
      • Is Governed By…[inverse is: Governs…]
      • Is Classified By…[inverse is: Classifies…]
    • Business Term #2: Select the business term. Click in the Business Term #2 field to navigate and select the business term or use the Find option to search and select the specific business term.
      Note You can associate only one business term at a time.
    • Description:Enter the description of the relationship.
  6. Click Create Relationship.

Results

The association between the business term and data asset is created.

View business terms associated with another business term

You can view the business terms associated with a business term.

Perform the following steps to view the list of business terms associated with another business term:

Procedure

  1. Navigate to the Business Glossary.

  2. Select the business term for which you want to view the association.

  3. Click the Associations tab.

    The following table describes the column details.

    Column NameDescription
    Business TermSpecifies the business term associated with the selected business term.
    RelationshipSpecifies the relationship between the associated business terms.
    DescriptionDescribes the relationship between two business terms.

Delete an association among business terms

You can delete an association if it is no longer needed.

Perform the following steps below to delete an association:

Procedure

  1. Navigate to the Business Glossary page.

  2. Select the business term for which you want to delete the association.

  3. Click the Associations tab.

  4. Select Business Terms from the Associated drop-down list.

    The list of associated data assets or business terms opens.
  5. Select the check box for the association that you want to delete.

    NoteYou can select multiple associations for deletion.
  6. Click Delete.

Results

The selected associations are deleted.
